Choosing a good domain name is not as easy today as it was years ago and it is getting harder every day.

Short and to the point names are scarce.

There are more websites and registered domain names than the entire population of the planet.

There are many factors that have to be considered before deciding on a domain name.

What is the purpose of your domain?

Are you selling something?

Is it going to be an extension of your current business?

Or is it primarily personal or informational?

If you want your domain name to be typed into a search engine browser easily then keep it short and do not use numbers or hyphens.

If you want your domain to have three or more words then hyphens are an option to consider and search engines like dashes that separate keywords, but people don’t.

The length of your domain name comes down to what your website is about and what products or services you are selling.

There are a great number of experts that will tell you to put keywords related to your content into the title of your domain.

This is not necessary.

It is necessary to try and have it somehow related to your content but most importantly it should be easy to find and to remember, the shorter the better.

You can add all the keywords that you want into the page titles and folders.

Using the .com extension is preferred, but if it is not available you can try .net, but this is not recommended.

Try to always use .com, even if you have to change the domain name somewhat.

There are more than 70 million .COM domains registered worldwide.

That’s a lot of domain names out on the Internet that are either already taken or just parked in some obsolete spot gathering dust and all kinds of age.

The most common names like joker.com are already taken by domain name investors who resell the rights to the domain names.

Can you imagine someone having www.america.com ? He’s just waiting to sell it to the highest bidder!

There are 900 possible combinations for two letter sequences.

If you’re looking for “ET” then you just won’t find it!

Even allowing for digits, again every single web address is taken.

Of course, that’s ignoring the fact that .COM registrars now mandate a 3-character minimum length, so it wouldn’t be an option.

Many of the three-letter sequences are taken.

Adding digits to a domain name creates a number of garbage domain entries.

If you’re dying to acquire great domains and unique domain names, they’ll free up sometimes only to be auctioned off through unique domain name sales.

The longer the domain name that you choose, the more that the possibilities are that it could be available presuming that you’re willing to accept an arbitrary sequence of letters and/or digits.

For example, most organizations have 4 letter acronyms (WQAM.com and AFTA.org so you may have a chance using over 4 letters to get the domain name that you want in acronym style!

Of course many of the registered domains are ever, visited, with a huge percentage having nothing more than a “parked page” (users pay domain registrars to put up ads for themselves on these type of parked pages).

There are so many combinations and back door tricks to domain name cataloging and classification until the possibilities are endless.

The rule is to obtain a domain name that closely resembles who you are about which gives you and identity and brand on the internet.

Simple and short domain names register better with people’s memory and are easier to remember.

Buy a domain name that will help you in your marketing niche and strategy.

Like I stated before, you can use your business name as your URL.

If your business name is already taken by someone else then get a URL name close to what you are doing.

Purchasing a business name domain name isn’t the only way to go, and when a keyword domain name could do just fine.

If you plan on using the .net extension, you may want to wait on deciding your name until after you have found an available domain name that is suitable to your type of business.

Follow the steps below in identifying your name brand to the Internet community.

Structure Your Brand Name – Put your domain name on your letterhead, business card, printed materials; put it on your phone recording, the side of your car; don’t forget to include it with your email.

Keep it Short & Memorable – Don’t get a URL that uses all 26 letters of the alphabet.

Buy a .com URL – I strongly recommend purchasing a .com domain name as opposed to a .net, .info, .biz or anything else.

If your chosen domain name is not available in a .com, keep looking until you find one that isn’t taken.

There is nothing wrong with the other extensions but when you have a .com extension, it sounds like you’ve been on the net a long time.

Remember, your domain name is an extension of your business and your brand of product or service so choose your domain name carefully.

Whether it’s for your own personal blog, or business website, selecting a good quality domain name is an important decision.

The right choice brings visitors to your site, but its true value comes when they try to find it a second time and didn’t bookmark it.

THE DOMAIN NAME :-

Commonly known as your website address, it’s a word, or phrase, that people type to locate your site.

At one time the full address was entered (http://www.), but that’s no longer necessary with the latest browsers.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web.

The first part of URL’s is the protocol identifier and indicates how the system searches.

The second part is called a resource name and specifies the domain name where the resource is located.

These two sections are separated by a colon and two forward slashes.

A URL for “Your Website” could be “http://www.yourwebsite.com”.

EXTENSIONS :-

Every domain name has a suffix attached indicating where the site belongs.

.ca – Canada
.com – Commercial business
.edu – Educational institutions
.gov – Government agencies
.mil – Military
.net – Network organizations
.org – Organizations (non-profit)

CHOOSE YOUR DOMAIN NAME FIRST :-

Choose a domain name before building your website.

Once you’re using a domain name and attracting a steady stream of visitors it’s difficult to change to another name without losing some of the traffic you’ve been enjoying.

Finding a name that works for you can be a tedious trial-and-error process, but the time taken up front is worth the effort.

DOMAIN NAMES AS WEBSITE NAMES :-

You want people to easily identify your website and the best way of doing this is to have it named the same as its domain name.

Having your URL and your name the same, people can quickly relate the website to the address and automatically know where to go.

LENGTH OF THE NAME :-

Good domain names provide a one to three keyword summary of your site.

Names can be any length up to 67 characters.

The shorter you keep your name the easier it is to type with less possibility for mistake.

HYPHENATED NAMES :-

If you can, keep hyphens, dashes, underscores and other characters out of your domain name.

They’re too easy to forget when typing the name, or when people are verbally recommending your site.

ABBREVIATIONS :-

Unless the abbreviation is in your name, or company trademark, and easily identified with you, or what you’re selling, don’t use them.

How does your domain name sound when you read it over the phone to somebody ?

If you need to explain abbreviations, spelling, hyphens, or other special characters, you’ve got a problem.

PLURAL FORMS :-

Try not to use the plural form in any domain name.

It’s too easy for potential visitors to omit the “s” in the name which means they may never get to your website.

USING “THE, AND, MY” IN DOMAIN NAMES :-

There’s nothing wrong using “the”, “my” or “and” as long as you promote your site with the full form of the name so people don’t forget to add the necessary “the” in their search.

EXTENSIONS OTHER THAN .COM :-

The .com extension is the most identifiable with anyone using the internet, but it may not be available for the name you’ve chosen.

When using alternates like .net, or .ca remember to promote your website and business with the full domain name, including the extension.

You don’t want people searching for you as .com instead of .ca.

REGISTERING YOUR NAME :-

Once you’ve decided on a good domain name, register it.

It’s relatively inexpensive and easy to do.

Your chosen web host will normally do it for you.

Even the free web hosts provide registration for a nominal fee if you’re building your site with them.

Finally, no matter what name you’ve chosen, or how many domain names you’ve decided to register, you have to support it.

Your domain name has to be incorporated in your website’s logo and shown on all your business cards and stationery.

Wherever you can, let your site name be known.
